Audio from the Ironbaby

Click here to listen to the Audio from my self-supported Ironman. If this is your first time visiting this page and you like what you hear, subscribe to the show using iTunes (link is under "links" on the right side of the page), or subscribe using other podcast aggregators. Find out more at www.podcastalley.com. This is show # 67, so there's lots more where this came from. This post is just a quick addition to the previous posting, so if you were sent to this page by friends telling you to check out this wacko who did an Ironman on his own, you'll need to skip down to the previous posting for pictures and a write-up on how it happened.

I included call-ins and a blog reading from Cav, the Wonder Down Under, along with pictures inside the mp3. I also received a substantal show donation from Scott and I'll describe how I'll use it on the next show.

Since I strung out my training for an extended period of time to do this event, I'm in dire need of a break. I'm going to switch regimens and become a surfer and rock climber for a few weeks. I still have great content for shows, including another interview with Andrea Fisher and a video, so don't worry about me going anywhere. Thanks again for all the support everybody gave me. It's YOU that made this event so dynamic. I was posting to the blog while "racing" and reading your replies/comments as I was chugging along, which has to be a first. Congratulations on being true groundbreakers!

I'm thinking about making t-shirts up, so any ideas would be appreciated.

Hey man, great job on the strong Ironman! It was awesome hearing you finish - this is one of the top shows I've heard from you. Congrats!!

Well done Brett. I considered doing something like this after the Dublin city Marathon, my home town. I really prepared for it, and then I got sick with a stomach bug 2 days before the race.
I couldn’t race, all my friends did PB's
I was so disappointed I was going to run a self supported marathon helped by my friends. I was talked out of it by my coach saying I wouldn’t run a good time because it was not a proper race.
Now I feel I should have done it
Awesome effort, this takes serious mental strength doing it all on your own…

Dude! I just finished listening to the entire podcast. You are the man! Most people probably would have found hundreds of excuses/reasons why not to finish, but you charged on!

The stress in your voice in the later stages of the run truly show how difficult what you accomplished is!

The audio from Cav cracked me up!

Enjoy your time off. I've got to find the source of my bike fit problem so my knees will stop hurting!

Yo Brett... Loving the last show. The reality of it all was just rockin'.

You are the original guerilla triathlon stud!

How you feeling now?

knee problems are usually from your bike seat too low. you'd be suprised how high up it should be. also, you might need some more float in your pedals.

i'm feeling pretty good, cav! It's time to start up a Zentri Team with jerseys!

Brett, Just listened to your IM on the way to work today - congrats. The coolest thing was to hear the highs (and lows) as you went about your business. Note to self: coffee == bad idea. To do something like that on your own, in the rain - man, that is genuinely impressive. Keep up the casts.

Hi Brett,

Love the podcasts in more than one way. First of all they keep me entertained at my very boring job and two, it has motivated me to get up and move.

I work full-time and go to school, almost full-time which leaves little time to workout. Regardless if you want to do a triathlon or not, the training for one, at any degree, is a great fitness regiment. Given that fact, that is how I’m using your motivation to motivate me to get up, move and tri to do a little something everyday.

About two years ago I was preparing for my first triathlon. At the time I was an avid swimmer/lifeguard and did a pretty good job on the bike, it was my run that was in bad shape. The triathlon was a sprint so I thought if worse came to worse I would race-walk the run.

Anyway, to make a long story short I never made it to the event. Three weeks before the event, and after fifteen years of complaining to various doctors about my legs and feet swelling, I was finally diagnosed with lymphedema in both of my legs. Since that time I’ve gone down hill as far as keeping up with a fitness program of any kind.

So thank you and Emily, who has her own struggles, for putting my life back into perspective, it doesn’t matter so much if you make it to the event, as long as you keep on trying to make it. The end result equals fitness.

Signed,
Susan
No more excuses!

You've caught on that this podcast is NOT about how to be a fast triathlete or even how to do one triathlon in particular. It's how to become and stay fit by using triathlon training, and then being able to enjoy life better because you're much more fit than before. There's a huge difference between doing triathlons and being a triathlete. Triathlon training teaches you so much about yourself; your limits, your patience, your health, your personality, your successes and failures, and how to deal with them. Best of all, the mental endurance you learn teaches you how to deal with life. If you can run a marathon, you can wait in line for those concert tickets you need. If you can swim a mile and then bike 20, you can endure your neighbor being a jerk for 5 minutes... with a smile. That's why I named the show "Zen". Zen is about finding yourself and your place in this world, and any endurance athlete will tell you that triathlon training will lead to some incredible introspective moments. I've read several times that becoming a triathlete is like becoming a jedi - it requires the ultimate in mind over matter and self-understanding. The goal is to do that first triathlon, and then more, and then reach a stasis of training and health. You can do it! I was doing a half-ironman once and was booking it up a very steep hill when a guy with one leg passed me like I was standing still. It's all mind over matter.
