Darkfoot and the Legend of Rita
Hey, tri-studs. I'm posting this as Hurricane Rita is moving in like that ugly guy with bad breath in the apartment above you back in college. The wind is really picking up, but no rain yet. We should have power for quite some time, so no worries for now. I've got the mp3 player chock full of podcasts and a handful of batteries, so I should have lots of entertainment in any case. Maybe I should go out and record myself trying to ride a bike into the wind?
This podcast (get it here) has me running barefoot in the dark at about 6 AM on Thursday morning. I discuss the koolest of the kool: Fixed-gear bikes. Here is the list of the best websites about this awesome trend - http://www.oldskooltrack.com/, http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/, http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed/. Also, if you like danger on two wheels, don't miss out on this video.
Lastly, here's the link to the newest gadget from Garmin - A GPS-based dedicated bike computer. Maybe you shouldn't buy it, but you can at least know about it first. It's a completely different way to measure distance on your bike.

Dude, very cool site. I have listened to almost all of your podcasts. Keep them coming. I'm a lonely semi-newbie triathlete in Raleigh, NC, and am information starved!

That edge is pretty cool looking, but I don't know if I "need" another GPS unit (already have the Forerunner 201). I am definitely tossing it around though!
Yeah. The problem with GPS is that it doesn't work all the time or even in all places. For example, there's a significant portion of the running route around Town Lake in Austin that runs under a roadway. It's basically the first deck in a double-decker bridge. The Forerunner did not work there when I tried it. Lots of people don't know the limitations of GPS and the GPS companies are certainly not going to go out of their way to tell you what they are. I have to know GPS pretty well for my work, so here's the scoop: GPS signal comes from satellites and is a very weak signal at that. It cannot penetrate buildings. Therefore, GPS will not work indoors unless you hold the device up against a window and rub chicken bones together. It also will usually not work in thick tree canopy. Not only that, but satellites can be in a "constellation" that makes the triangulation (quality of accuracy) worthless. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to start a run and sat around waiting for the Garmin to get enough signal to be usable. After a while, you just have to say "screw it" and leave it behind. Bike computers already work really, really well, so you'd have to need it for actual navigation for it to be worth it. I tend to wander on my bike, so maybe it could keep me from getting lost.

I listened to your podcast today, thanks to flatman's recommendation.
It was great! Keep up the good work.
Awesome as always! I hear you still mentioning Aggieland Cycling but what ever happened to them sponsoring your Podcast? Don't hear anything about it anymore. Keep up the good work!

Aggieland sponsorship
I will show them your post and try to convince them to give away another product. The seat we gave away was pretty expensive and hardly anybody tried to win it, so it didn't seem like it was that good of an idea.
Maybe now that the number of subscribers has skyrocketed, we can try it
again.
I just got some great news that is going to make this podcast explode in popularity and I'm literally bursting trying not to leak it out. I'm going to have to move the hosting to another server to accomodate the jump in bandwidth for sure. Let's keep our fingers crossed and remember fondly the days when zentri was just a little old podcast with 20 listeners or so. We are currently at 200+ a day and growing (and that's just iTunes listeners), using 75 gigs of data transfer a month. Wow!
Cool I cant wait to see whats in store. I have filtered through tons of podcasts and only listen to about 4 and quite honestly the other 3 I could care less about, but if Zen Tri isnt delivered in a timely fashion I start to get edgy! LOL Up the podcasts bro to about 3 a week and I will be satisfied. J/K
