I have listened to your podcast from the beginning and I really enjoy it.
However, I'm disappointed at the stance you've taken in the days following. I just listened to your IMW podcasts I and II.
First, let me say that you come across as not being very thankful for the opportunity you've had to train like a pro for the last year. I've been doing triathlon for 23 years and have only briefly had a coach. Only recently have I had a bike and gear of the quality you were given. Be thankful.
Secondly, as far as the sacrifices go, they are your choice. I have chosen to do triathlon and IM (8x finisher) on my own terms, but its a cop out to say you have to sacrifice everything. Not true. I have two teenagers that have grown up seeing me do triathlon, and of course, there were sacrifices, but they learned from seeing those sacrifices be made. Also, I've adapted my training schedule to get most of my workouts done as early in the day as possible. Many days, I can get in a 50 mile bike and a 5 mile run before they even get out of bed. So it comes down to: How bad do you want it?
Third, triathlon is expensive. Thats not a new discovery, but you need to put on a race to appreciate the economics and the support necessary to keep 2100 people safe on public roads and waterways, the permits, police, medical, food, etc. You are naive in that regard, not intending to be offensive.
Fourth, everyone gets sick of the training before its over, especially near the end. The long build and anticipation of the race pushes you to mentally get there. Its not because you and Jetpack live in the south and its hot. I live in GA and its hot here too.
Last, doing an Ironman is an honor. You should be happy you had the opportunity to do one under the conditions you were able to get. Whether its self supported or not, the distance is the same, but its only a race if someone else is competing.
I'll continue to listen, but I suggest you be a little more appreciative of your sponsors and respective of the sport.
