The Building of the Tri-Cave
Having a dedicated workout space is the best! Tired of riding the bike in the living room, we finally took the leap and are currently converting a spare room that rarely gets used into a "Tri-Cave".
First step was to get the furniture out. After that, we put in a treadmill and started painting. The bike on rollers moved in next, with a laptop to stream video for entertainment.
We are still waiting on the couch, a little more painting, and the shelves to put the laptop onto.
Right off the bat, I've noticed a few things:
- It's nice to have an entire room to keep most of the gear in. HR straps, running shoes, and more is easier to find when it has a place to live.
- You can get more biking and running done when you don't have to "gear up" for an outdoor adventure every single time.
- It is a fantastic solution for those of us with kids. You can keep an eye on them, pause and resume workouts, and answer all those millions of kid questions like, "Well, the cat's not technically flammable, but let's not try to find out."
- All the nutrition and hydration in the world is available whenever you need it.
- You can get in a solid hour plus in the middle of the day or night and not get sunburn, frostbite, windburn, or whatever the issue might be this time of year.
- You can use a video camera to film yourself to see your own form. This tool is one of the most powerful methods to get faster and prevent or fix issues that can be contributing to injuries.
It all looks good for now, so stay tuned to see how long the honeymoon lasts!

I have a similar "training room setup at home. I found it beneficial to put down a cushion floor mat, I know Walmart sells similar items as this type.
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/4/FitnessWellness/SpecialtyEquipment/PRD~0840162P/Equipment%252BMat.jsp?locale=en
This will protect your flooring from:
1. The "stuff" from the treadmill belt wearing
2. Sweat, water (hornet juice) etc.
and it allows you do have a cumfy spot to stretch afertwards.
Just some thoughts, enjoy the podcast, keep it up.

I second the 'floor mat' suggestion!
Maybe include or mount an extra fan(s) to keep cool?
Enjoy the set up! Congrats!

they sell those mats at tractor supply, they are cheaper there and usually bigger
Agree with the big oscillating fan(s) in the corner. Maybe two for cross ventilatiion. Make sure and setup some killer speakers, too, as your trainer and the treadmill will get major loud in that small room. Also, consider some sound dampening wall hangings like they use in recording studios so all the major sound isn't bouncing all over the place. Did you say a small fridge, too? Sounds fun and looking forward to Tri-Cave update segments! Enjoy!
don't forget the pinball machine!
instead of using hulu and netflix etc. install boxee. it is 100% free and is like computer tv and does netflix hulu and all sorts of other cool stuff. Then you can see videos and send them to boxee. I see Bretts webpage in the morning and just tag the vids to my boxee account and watch them later onthe big screen because I have a mac mini attached to my TV.
you can also suggest videos to friends and they to you
