I just saw the Gary Hall Sr video last week and tried it in my swimming. I could tell I wasn't able to pull with as much power, but I could also tell I was going faster as I started swimming a smidge faster than this other dude that is usally a bit faster than me (to his dismay).
I did my 3000 yard swim about 4 seconds per lap faster than average, that is a lot as you know. Now I just need to get those slightly different arm muscles used to doing that as they were a bit sore the next day.
Coach,
I understand what you mean about being speechless when interviewing Jamie Patrick. I've listened to the interview twice, and I'm still stuck on his doing a triple ironman! You've GOT to bring him back....I still don't understand how he keeps from getting hypothermic. How does he eat? What does he eat? How does he navigate? Does he switch strokes? Does he agree with "total Immersion" technique? What gear does he use? How does he sleep? Does he have skin breakdown from being in the water so long? Is saltwater more irritating? Does the saltwater lead to more dehydration? How will he monitor his urine output and electrolytes? How many people did the triple ironman? How do you get permission to swim Lake Tahoe or rivers, etc. There's more to ask....what he is doing is frighteningly amazing, "awesome" and self destructive all at once. Suddenly 100 mile ultras sound tame!
Great interview with Jamie Patrick. I just listened the the POD cast yesterday, came home turned on Universal Sports, and they where doing a documentary on his Tahoe double. Really Awesome.
Bret, your comments on rollers made me laugh, it took about 2 weeks before I could ride with out falling off, my kids never laughed so hard. Anyhow look up emotion rollers on youtube.
