Iron Surf
Hey, gang! I take you with me on this podcast to the ultimate swimming confidence building destination: Surfing! I escaped work last Friday to surf small waves coming in from Hurricane Wilma and recorded portions of the trip, explaining how it benefits your tri training and confidence in the water. What better way to get better at swimming in open water than to do it while riding energy waves for fun? (Yes, I took those pictures in TEXAS)
Doug and I tried to intercept the Ironstar Half Ironman race by riding 30 miles out to the bike course and waiting for them. Turns out the only race related anything we encountered was a Powerbar wrapper. It made for some funny audio as we tried to figure out what was going on.
Lastly, I mention that I talked to a friend that reminded me that he talks with Lance Armstrong quite often and asked me if I'd like to go ride with them. Yeah, I think I'd be up for that. Mr. Armstrong is a very busy man, so we'll see what ever comes of it. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Coming up soon: I finally snagged an interview with my ultra-runner friend in the parking lot of a local pool and I'll be staying in Houston for a software training class and checking out the running situation at Memorial Park. I've got boarding set up, but wouldn't mind staying with a listener instead in exchange for an interview. I need to stay in the Galleria area. Let me know if you want to be on the air!

Hey guys, just a little update from Singapore. We just finished the New Balance Corporate Triathlon on Saturday 22 October. ()
I'm very sad to report that tragedy struck us. A 40-year-old employee of Hewlett-Packard drowned during the Mixed Relay. Wai-Piew HO is survived by his wife and two children (10 and 8). The wake is currently on and his funeral will be on Wednesday 26 October.
I spoke to my colleague who was in the same swim wave as Wai Piew, and he said that the sea was very choppy at that part of the morning. My swim was 9am and theirs was at 10.45am. The sea was a little choppy at 9am but apparently became wilder as the morning went on. The cause of death is still not known.
This tragedy has shaken us up really badly. Even though I didn't know him personally, I'm terribly affected by the knowledge that a person died while doing a triathlon.
I feel lucky to be alive, but yet at the same time, I feel bad to feel lucky when I think of the shock his family must be going through right now. I have resolved to cherish my time with my wife and try to live my life to the max. The traffic on Singapore is not cyclist-friendly. And one of my fears, and my wife's biggest fears is that I get hurt while out riding. But I guess we can't let bad traffic stem our passion for this sport.
I'm sorry to write such a sad post, but this is the only thing that is on my mind for now. For everyone out there training and racing, please be safe and take good care of yourselves and your family.
Brett,
Really enjoy the show. It seems like I remember seeing something on your site about the equipment (microphone and recorder) you use to capture the podcast but couldn't locate anything today. I've always been impressed with the quality of your podcasts especially on your runs. Can you let me know what type of equipment you use?
Thanks and keep up the good work.
So sorry to hear about the drowning. It does happen every once in a while in tris. Doug was riding right behind a guy who died in a bike wreck in California a few years back. I also remember seeing some pictures of an Ironman where the waves went absolutley psycho during the swim and lots of people got hurt. This is an extreme sport and people have to always remember that there are times when it can be very dangerous. I think people get comfortable in the danger zone and forget how dangerous it really is. Again, so sorry. I hope his family deals with it ok.
Rhinocat, I use an iriver ifp790 and a cheap-ass lapel mic from radio shack. The mic is powered by a watch battery. It's not the best setup, but it's very portable and allows me to make the show sound like it's constantly on the move.
When are you going to upgrade to an uber-hawt Giant Squid Audio omni-directional mic?
I just moved down under from Upstate New York and found this wonderful world of podcasts to keep in touch with what is going on in the states. I am planning doing a few long course tri's and hopefully qualify for the Australian Ironman.
I just wanted to see if you might be interested in some race reports from down under when there aren't too many races going on in the States?
Hey, yos. I'm staying at a hostel in Houston right now and they actually have WiFi. If you pull back the veneer of "run-down shantyville" they've got going on here, you'll find a total computer geek running the front desk and the house right next door is Daniel Boone Cycles ( www.danielboonecycles.com ) rated top 100 bike stores in the USA. I've got a show in the works covering the adventure I've been going through lately and I'm only halfway done with the week!
I'd love to put content from Oz on the show. Australia is my favorite land of triathlon and I definitely want to show the rest of the world how you guys do it up right. My show is really y'all's show and it's quickly becoming a platform for triathletes to post their stuff and I love it.
I went into an Apple store for the first time today and well, wow. That Nano is something else.
I agree with you about the surf training and not just for confidence... it's a great workout!
