Trail Run from Hell
Stay tuned to the end of this podcast and you can find out how I was attacked by one of these bastards. I go for a trail run at Lake Somerville and describe my week from Hell; trying to train while on the road for work. I play listener audio from Singapore, fall down while running, Kai has an allergic reaction, stay at a youth hostel, go running at Rice University, visit the Apple store, find an army of leaf-cutter ants, get stuck in traffic, and interview a real radio personality all in one show. I'll add more notes here a little later in the day. Gotta run! (swim)
Ok, back again. I updated this post with a picture of my worst sting two days after it happened. You can see the line of dots where the spines stuck me. It also stung me in four other places. Listen to the podcast to get the scoop on all the symptoms I had. Nature attacks!

What in the heck is that thing???
Re: "Asp" = Puss Caterpillar
(from http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/entfacts/misc/ef003.htm)
"This one-inch caterpillar is covered with a dense woolly coat of soft brown hair, with tail-like hairs at the rear end. Beneath the hairs are numerous short poisonous spines that can cause severe irritation. They are often found feeding on various trees and shrubs, including elm, maple, hack berry, oak, sycamore and others. Young caterpillars often feed in groups. Sting severity increases with size of caterpillar. Puss caterpillar stings are often more severe than those of other caterpillars."

maybe off topice here, been listening to you complain about the heat on some old podcasts and it is really funny as I am running in sub-freezing temps this morning at 5 AM in Bend, Oregon. Thanks...
DREW
my goodness, I've not heard the podcast yet, but the caterpillar thing is ugly and the description of the sting is scary. yuck! i hope you guys didn't get stung... =(
Right on, Drew! I love cold weather running. I'm going for a 6 miler barefoot tommorow morning and it's supposed to be in the 40s. Gotta break out the beanie and lightweight gloves for the first mile.
Yeah, that thing stung me in four places. One mark is really cool looking and I'll try to get the pic on the blog tonight.
I love my 2yr old iPod-but the video ipods look sweet. You can get a $40 Griffin iTalk that lets you record onto the ipod.
I just realized that the Asp looks so much like a kiwi fruit. =)
anyway, brett, i listened to the podcast where you put my audio on, and you said that my name was Daniel. You corrected it at the end of the podcast, but there wasn't any need to do so. I wounldn't remember names properly when I'm out running either. So no worries about that. =)
Cheers!
Hey, Brett, thanks for the shout out on the show. I was thinking that maybe I could start reading some of the posts and you could use them as commentaries on the show if you are interested.
All the best,
Cav
I'd be really stoked to put your audio on my show. It'd be from Oz and you're a pretty articulate dude, so it should be really cool.
That goes for everybody - Want to be on the show? Just send some audio and you're on! I get a lot of questions about what I use to record, so here's the answer for everbody asking -
I use two devices: The Muvo and the iRiver.
I think the Muvo is by far the best mp3 player out there. I record on it by using the built in mic. The quality of the recording is only ok, but perfect for quick notes. The recording volume is the same as the playing volume, so make sure you turn the volume way up before you record.
The iRiver is the only player with a pre-amp built in for an external
mic. I use it with a lapel mic I got from radio shack for really high quality recordings. It is clumsy, awkward, and complicated, so I only use it when I have to. It is also very easy to screw up and lose the recording, so I recommend not getting one unless you plan on becoming a podcaster. If you are just a listener and want to take voice notes, the Muvo is the way to go.
I ran and won a 5k race today and recorded it with the muvo because it is so light and convenient. The rest of the show was recorded on my bike using the iRiver. Listen for the differences on the next show!
Brett - Great show. It got me through 7.5 miles of running! It was so funny - after your story about the Asp I freaked out everytime something brushed against my arms or legs. Ha HA!
That last podcast about the hostel in Houston was hilarious. My friends and I definately stayed there last year and met a whole bunch of crazy people. I know exactly what you were going through. We all rolled in there with Powerbooks, iPods, and I definately went running in that park after dark. Haha.
Thanks
Brian

hi cav, the last time i sent audio to brett was via email. I recorded the audio on my Mac, in mp3 format. then i just emailed to his gmail account (texafornia@gmail.com). it turned out fine. =) hope that helps.
