SHOPPING!

Before we get rolling, let me first post the messages of the great folks who've chipped in to the GO CAV! fund.

"CAV-have a safe and fast race"
"CAV-good luck Matt -We love ya! Pat and Dave"

This whole thing is really cool. We've raised $75 for him already! He's very excited and will definitely be charging hard at Ironman Australia because of our support. Cav, shoot me an email about how to transfer this cash to you ASAP.

Ok, so click here to listen to my day with Kai. We go to Aggieland Cycles to see what we can buy for $100 (xmas gift certificate) and then I give my initial impression of my new Nike Triax C8 heart rate monitor. I also experiment with my new Triathlete Random Insult Generator. T.R.I.G. starts throwing down the gauntlet in the last third of the show, so stay tuned.

Gave $2 this morning to the Cav fund instead of giving it to Starbucks. Not much but I figure if every listener gave up a cup of coffee for helping someone witha goal like this you would be there. GO CAV!!!!!!

I've been listening to your podcasts and just found your blog. I've been very impressed. As someone interested in creating athletics focused podcasts, I'd love to know more about the production side of what you do. For example it would be great to understand what equipment you are using to capture the audio when you are running and on your bike. It's great stuff!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Not to answer for Brett, but if you go through a lot of the older blog entries he has pics and descibes his setup :)

Man...I'm really pumped about the New Year...haha...that sounds dumb...everyone is pumped. Let's see if I'm still as pumped in a month!

I sent him an email describing my setup. I get so many requests for that info (a lot through email, not just comments here) that I've actually saved my response as a txt document and just copy and paste the contents to whoever asks.

New podcast coming out in a few hours...

I too would like to know your set up. You've inspired me to record my training thoughts while they are happening. It's going to be great when I go back after the season and listen.

My email address is lukenwi@yahoo.com

Thanks,

Luke

Here's my standard answer - "More than happy to help you out. I use an iRiver ifp790. I believe all 700 and 800 series iRivers have the mic preamp built in. You better snatch one up, because I think they're discontinued and they are the only brand or model with the preamp. Sony might make one, but I don't know for sure. Apparently, the preamp is essential. Check the forums on podcastalley.com for more info on that. I use a radio shack lapel mic (cheapo $15 job) for the bikes and run. It's mono and pretty crappy, but people like the sound. If it's windy, I put it in a Camelbak Compocket (mesh shoulder strap pocket) and then put it in an addition foam mic head cover and record while I ride with the wind. Make sure you ask me about some of the recording options on the iRiver before you give up on the thing. There's some settings buried deep in the options that have to be set just right or else it won't work. For around the house, I use a Lansing headset boom mic. I think it's a junker, but it gets the job done and records in stereo. I use Audacity (www.audacity.org) for mixing the audio and putting it out as an mp3. Audacity is great and free. On rare occasion, I'll use my Creative Muvo Micro mp3 player as a recorder just because it's convenient. The audio quality is barely tolerable, but I think people kind of enjoy the variety of audio inputs. The most important thing seems to be how much creativity you put in the audio, not just the quality."

In your case, I'd just use the built-in mic on the Creative Muvo Micro or similar model. You can hear it on my latest interview with Chris and the silly bit with Emily at the end of the same podcast. Remember that its recording volume is the same as the last volume setting you used on playback.
