Trip with the Zipp

Wassup, Rockstars? I lure my beautiful triathlete wife on the show for an interview about how she's training with other women for the 3M Half Marathon in Austin in January. I also go trail running in the park while pushing a baby jogger and biking in the hills around Noonday, TX. I drag along the Gear Bag from Zipp as I travel across Tex-ass to test out it's usefulness, toting along biking, running, and baby-changing gear. It's a true age-grouper gear test! Click HERE to listen and check out the show notes below!

  • Going trail running with Kai.

  • Got the Gear Bag from Zipp. Reviewing by podcast is cool!

  • Letting air out of baby jogger tires for better ride.

  • Riding on the Bike around my neighborhood.

  • Kids on motorized mini-cars instead of on bikes is the End of Times.

  • I should interview Emily more often.

  • I burned 1759 calories on the bike.

  • Emily calls out Garmin for bad calorie calculations. (Emily is wrong, of course).

  • Emily and I go for a run in Tyler, TX.

  • Comment on the blog with how many calories a 195 lb. person burns while running or biking.

  • I play Emily's "sexy intro" from long ago.

  • Emily's running the 3M Half Marathon in Austin and describes her training methods.

  • Emily says her training includes pillow fighting and making out with other chicks.

  • Mike Ricci of D3 says people should train for their first marathon but then only race a half.

  • Emily's pregnant!

  • No she's not.

  • Jetpack got picked as the next raceAthlete!

  • Emily gets all hippy and loves the colors of nature, then give us a new sexy intro.

  • I go biking around Noonday, TX

  • I go offroading on my QR Kilo.

  • Took a picture of a field of scarecrows.

  • I've modded my bike with a compact crankset and other junk.

  • I get chased by angry dog. He's obviously upset about something.

  • There's a horse grazing in somebody's front yard.

  • I've been reading a book called "The Golden Age of Zen". It makes a great effort at explaining what Zen is and how it compares to Christianity.

  • I demonstrate a Zen moment as I climb a hill.

  • What's it like for the woman to keep her last name when she gets married?

  • I talk about Zen and Taoism and other things I don't really understand.

  • The Zipp gear bag was an awesome bag for traveling with triathlon gear. Very organized.

Running: .653 calories/mile/pound
Cycling: .28 calories/mile/pound
Swimming: 2.93 calories/mile/pound

at say 195 pounderoos for 4 miles, that's 509 cals

my garmin forerunner 305 does a poor evaluation of elevation gain... generally doubles it... as a result, my calorie expenditure is generally twice what it should be.

the numbers above are averages... if you were climbing Alp d'Huez for example, your expenditure may be greater than on the flats... i'm just sayin'

[...] At this point, I actually felt pretty smart.  I had all my running gear way more organized than in a regular bag and I’d dropped my bag count down from two to one.  We did our run and everything went well.  I recorded the event and the rest of the review for a podcast, which you can check out here. [...]

funny i just watched a movie called \"wassup rockers\" http://www.wassuprockers.net/

Hey Brett!

In PT school we learned that cycling 14-15.9 mph for a 190 lb man would burn 863 calories in one hour. Different exertions and different weights will obviously burn different amounts of calories. You are probably right. Unfortunately Emily and I would burn less calories for the same ride since we weigh less, esp. if we rode slighly slower.

4 miles at 11:56 pace
651 cals HR 151 max 165

But how about this
In San Diego
16 miles at 13:10 pace
2816 cals HR 155 max 180

In Utah 3 weeks earlier
13.1 miles at 13:38 pace
3070 cals HR 156

Can altitude make that big of a difference?

All of the shows are great, but THIS SHOW was really great. I love how your podcasting has taken you to new places, but this show really felt like some of the first few months of shows where all you did was run and bike around for show after show after show. Great stuff how you ramble, tell us about the scenery, ramble some more, exert some more energy while I'm stuck in my car, give a book report, talk about your life and ramble some more. Talk to your wife, which is great. I agree that I like the microphone to pick up all of the sounds on the ride. And your book report on the Golden Age of Zen was awesome. Not that you need encouragement since you obviously love the EXPERIENCE of running and riding, but keep up the good work, surfer dude.
