Preview to a Raccoon

I went out to cover the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler championships and got TONS of audio and video. It's going to take me at least a few days to edit the audio and get it out to you guys, so be patient. It will be well worth it, because I got the true "behind-the-scenes" perspective on how they put on a 30 hour race and also the perspective of a spectator. The world record for 100 miles of trail running was set on this same course and yesterday's winner was within 45 seconds of it, but I won't tell you if he was faster or slower until you listen to the show. He did it in just over 13 hours, which equates to a 7:48 minute mile. FOR 13 HOURS.
Stay tuned!

Holly cow, 100 miles with a sub 8 minute pace. I don't even run around Greenlake (2.8 miles) at that pace I look foward to what you post. By the way, we got SUN in Seattle (I can't believe it.) So I had to go out for a ride on my bike.
Brett I need your Help and help of the Zen Tri Army. As you know I’ve been training for Iron-man South Africa on the 19th of March. Last weekend on Saturday I did a 90mile hilly bike ride in England’s Lake District a bit of a misnomer it should be called the hilly district.
Any how after about 78 miles I got this horrific stabbing pain in my left knee which felt like cramp but didn’t have the same locking out effect. The pain was just above the knee-cap on the inside, where your VMO joins your knee. The pain subsided but had that typical crampy feel of going to start again at any minute.
On Sunday I woke with no ill effects around the area, it just felt a little tired. I ran 17miles without a problem.
I trained as usual all week including a spinning session, without any problems. I Ran on Saturday 10miles no problems.
Got on the bike on Sunday to do a 4 hour ride after 1.5 hours the pain was back in my knee and felt worse I was saved from cycling on it any more by a blow out which damaged the tyre. My girl friend picked me up.
Now today I can really feel it, and I’m now really worried about I as I still have a good 3 week block of training to do before my taper with a couple of long ride in there. So here are the questions.
Has anybody out there experienced this, if so do they know how long it took to heal before they could cycle again.
p.s My girlfriend is a Physical Therapist and a Triathlete but she refuses to treat me because I’m the only patient she has that says are you sure. Only kidding she does treat be but gives me and especially hard time.
Thanks Kevin in Scotland
Damn...that's fast AND a long time!
I don't know about the pain in the knee issue. My wife's a LVN, but not an expert in sports injuries. Anybody? Cav?
Ok gang up date on the Knee problem. Looks like its all superficial and the pain is cramp.
So here is the cause, all very technical.
I went down to the my girlfriend’s clinic today, I’m very lucky having a girlfriend who is such a good Physio.
She and her boss who has been around since the beginning of time and seen every sports injury possible had a look.
So there seems to be some irritation on the medial (inside) part of the joint but nothing bad no inflammation or reduction in movement and only minor pain when you poke the joint real hard.
So after assessing my movement and strength no differences which is good, that rules out tears and pulls and strains.
We then went into another part of the clinic set up my bike on the Tacx trainer and set me off cycling in front of a big mirror. Immediately we could see a big difference in my leg action the right leg goes up and down like a piston no lateral motion very stable and all the muscle groups firing when they should including gluts and hamstrings.
On my left hand side I was all over the place left knee doing a wiggle on the way up and wiggle on the way down. So conclusions where
This was putting my VMO in the wrong place during the maximum power part of the leg stroke, plus my Gluts on the left just turn off during the up stroke causing more instability. The VMO has to work extra hard to complete its part in the range of motion and eventually craps out.
This plus a saddle lowering adjustment before a 90 mile ride seems to have been a bit more than my knee could take and has given up. So prescription is moderate rest building up distance on bike again and lots of stability exercises.
So guys here one to watch out for in the future, put your bikes on the turbo in front of a mirror and take a peek at what your knees are doing they should only be going up and down in a straight line with no wobble. If they are you might need to get it looked at if you start too really up the mileage other wise best leave well enough alone.
Hope this helps for the future, panic over.
Thanks Kevin in Scotland.
I can't wait to make my own useless videos.
That was meant to be in homage. Yours wasn't useless.
I need full body armour when I ride.
