How Can I Ruin This Tri?

I was coaching two friends last night on swimming technique and swam some butterfly to make the most of the little time I was spending in the pool. If I have an hour to swim, I'll do freestyle. If I only have half an hour, I'll mix in lots of butterfly to make it harder.

My friend started joking that I should swim butterfly for the whole 500 meter swim portion of the sprint tri we are training for. We laughed, then thought about it...

I tried swimming 500 meters of butterfly and died did it! So now we are talking about this -


  • 500 meters butteryfly

  • 15 miles fixed-gear

  • 3 miles running... how?


I used to run barefoot a lot. Still do it some. I'd do it for this one but half of the run is on really nasty gravel and such. I can do it in aquasocks, but that doesn't sound that crazy.

I need some suggestions on how to do the run to make it harder. I've thought about backwards, but that might cause me to fall down. Any ideas? Wigs, skipping... anything is appreciated.

I say you do old school steeplechase style. Have obstacles every few hundred meters and big puddles of water that you have to hurl yourself over.

Manacles, limiting you to a maximum of two thirds of your normal stride length, possibly fashioned from clothes-line to prevent injury. Or ankle weights. Enjoy.

Three options:

1) drag a truck tire behind you the entire way (most practical)
2) crawl commando-style
3) streak - run commando style

Go cyclocross. Toss the bike over your shoulder and go. I do like the extra weight idea too. 50 lb weight vest?
