I was on Runners Roundtable!

I was lucky enough to be asked to be a guest on Runners Roundtable yesterday.  I found the experience to be fun and odd.  I think their podcast idea is fantastic, so I was very excited to talk about ultra running and high mileage training.  But the angle they most wanted to talk to me about was Zen.  Zen?  Me?  I know that's in the title of the show and I talk about it some, but I always thought I was just winging that part.  Then the host started mentioning all the Zen stuff I have said in just one podcast and it hit me about how much I've learned and tried to pass on to others.

So I just realized that I'm a Zen guy first, triathlete second, runner third.  Funny how reality can be so different from what you thought it was.  How so very... Zen?

I can't wait to be back on someday.  I'm hoping that it is soon after I race the Ragnar and we can talk about that experience.

Thanks, RR!

Yes, it sounded like Adam threw you for a little bit of a loop. You're also going to have to go back and listen to your definition of "Triathlon", which was pretty funny. I knew putting the Zen Runner and Zen Triathlete together would be uber cool. I loved whoever thought of a Zen off. What would the two of you do? Compete to see who could achieve total enlightenment first? Awesome!

I was really guutted at not being able to join in last night. I was really looking forward to talking to 'live' after following the show for so long. Anyway, hope to be on the show when they ask you back.

Can't wait to listen. :-) I've been listening to more and more things involving biking, since an injury (possible stress fracture) has me out of running for the moment. I'm such a cycling newbie, on my 8-year-old Toys R Us bike; hopefully, osmosis from people who know so much more will help. Looking at replacing the bike with a Trek (in Wisconsin, it's hard to find anything else!), possibly one of the hybrids, since I'll be on both trails and roads...not sure yet.

Carrie, all runners should bike at least some. Biking is a zero-impact method to get blood flowing through the legs and flush out the soreness/lactic acid after a hard run. If you're really sore from running, try to go for an easy 1 hour bike ride. You'll feel much better!

Brett,

Zen guy or not, your advice turned me onto the lectures at zencast.org and I have been having a revolution, taking time to meditate...re-evaluating how I look at some things in life, etc....You have brought much contemplation and growth to me!

My problem is that I'm finding it's so much harder to get the same endorphin rush from cycling that I got from running - especially since the ortho wants me to avoid hills for now, too. I go out for an hour and barely get up a sweat. :( I'm also a chicken about speed, but that's probably attributable to being a newbie, and maybe I'll get more comfortable with higher speeds over time.

But it's not a stress fracture, according to the bone scan results.

Hey man! I just listened to your zen thoughts on the Runners Roundtable! I am a great fan of the zen runner and I really enjoyed you two discussing with each other, lol! :-D I saw you are blogging since 2005, it will take me a while to know something more about you, but I'm putting your blog in my feeds and I will bring an episode of your podcast with me as soon as I go running... (now it's PORING rain... not very zen!) :-D Ciao!
