Triathlon, the Universe, and Everything

Join me for a nice long Birthday Bike Ride as I take you along with me for 34 miles of two-wheeled goodness. This is an old-skool Zentri throwback - I blab about everything from racing to religion. You get all this plus a cool new promo, a voicemail, and audio of what it sounds like training at the Ironman level. Check out the show and don't forget to vote for us in the Podcast Awards!

Shownotes!

  • Promo for Zentriathlon!

  • Voicemail about training with Nike+ to improve running.

  • Out on the bike, checking tires for glass.

  • I'm out on my Birthday Ride!

  • Pearl Izumi ad about finding dead people while running.

  • Story about how my mother found a dead body while running.

  • Picking a riding route based on workout goals.

  • My normal riding route has "the twistiest highway in Texas" (FM 3090).

  • I'm covered in poison ivy and chigger bites from trail running.

  • Went to a meditation class, hung out with the teacher-lady and talked about enlightenment.

  • Comparing religions is fun. How many do you really understand? What is their purpose?

  • Killed a black widow spider in garage.

  • How to keep a pet scorpion.

  • What is enlightenment, anyway? Americans think it is the ability to levitate and do magic.

  • There is no sin in Buddhism, just skillful and unskillful.

  • What is Jainism?

  • Tich nat han says enlightenment is appropriate response.

  • You can be enlightened right now by practicing giving the appropriate response all the time.

  • Phedippidations podcast is a cool running show. Love the sounds.

  • What are your favorite sounds on Zentri?

  • Vulnerability is nature's way of making humans pass on knowledge.

  • Jeff Galloway method of run/walking is great for long distance training (I called it Gallows on the podcast. Derp.)

  • Mike Ricci has us doing twice the length between walking. Which should I do?

  • Lost 7 lbs in sweat when riding 4.5 hours at maximum effort last week. Burned 3000+ calories on that ride.

That Pearl Izumi 'book' on the website is one of the coolest ads I've ever seen.

Great podcast as always!!!

You spoke briefly about loading up "gold member" with Noxzema. What are the benefits? I am always looking for a more comfortable ride!!!

Keep up the great work.

See you at IMW,

Hey Brett,
Great podcast!
I just finished 3rd Tri....the solana beach sprint tri..... finished 8th in my 51-54 AG!
First year of doing Tris and LOVE it....the training, the races, the people! Im soooo stoked (left on message on crydeli-two actually)

Love the show....like when you start out telling us what you are going to do, why etc....like the technical tips...practical ones.....like hearing how you go through the same stuff I do.....a nagging pain.....working through it.....bummed when you can't!.....Like the music (most of it)......the music shows are great!
The opening song (is that from Kill Bill?) is great too.

I like how you describe what your riding, running through.....dogs chasing you etc......

I live in North county San Diego, and love hearing about Poway, Del Dios Hwy etc...(local for me, so it's relative probably only to me!) ;-)

we need more shows with Emily (so my wife will lisen too).....the naked show was the BEST (only helmets?)

Thanks for the show....

Race Sunday July 29....Solana Beach Sprint Tri 1300 people.....I SUCKED on the run (22.25-5k)...but passed three people in my age grough the last 1/4 mile! YES! Weather was perfect....and the race was FLAT......very fast! Under an hour! (short distances)......
I'm training for an Olympic.....wanna stay close to San Diego.....I missed the SD International....but next year for sure

Take care,

Tom in Carlsbad

I really like the ramblings. I'm really impressed by the section about your 4 hour 80% ride. That's really hard. Nice job.

Best sound: Emily's accent (she should talk more). Runner-up: comments you make about passing traffic (your spur of the moment comments about dealing with the good, the bad, and the ugly are hilarious).

Best saying: Porkie-pigging (Kai wearing only a shirt).

You'll love this. I laughed when you got stung by the bee, but didn't think it could ever happen to me...ever. Rode around White Rock in Dallas today: almost got stung!! I rode like a scared little girl to get away from that bee!! Sorry for laughing at you...

The sound of the freewheel ticking over, or are you just sitting in 'The Zen Tri Studios' spinning that backwheel with one hand, while holding a beer in the other ?

The best sound on your podcasts? The fun!

Been a listener for sometime and always enjoy the show. Have now entered my first 70.3 (2008 at home in the UK). Next thing you know I'll be doing a full IM! It's all your fault! (Thanks :))

By FAR my favorite "sound" during all of your podcasts is when you're side-tracked by a thought/sound/scene... and you just can't help but go off and comment on it... regardless of what your "script" entails! That just keeps it real man! That is the way things happen in real life... you'll be talking/thinking about something... and WHAM... something else enters your mind and you just have to drop whatever you're doing and go with what's happening right at that moment! NICE! Keep it up Brett!!!

Thanks for the podcast! I like the sound of cars whizzing by while I'm running on a dirt road in South Dakota that has no cars on it. It's kind of a bizzare phenomenon.

Thanks for the insightful comments about responding skillfully to life situations and how this relates to Buddhism. Indeed, as you mentioned, there are parallels in other faith traditions, including my own (Matthew 24:15). Jesus says he's here to help the people of Israel, but a Canaanite women tells him that even though the people Jesus hangs out with consider her lower on the social scale, she is worthy of his help, too. Jesus seems to change his course of action in response to what the woman says.

I turned 34 this year, too. It's a great age to be!

Brett, I used to think you were cool until my comments were removed from your site. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though and assume it was some kind of technical glitch.
