Here is my bearded pirate look...very cool...I think.
Freakin' awesome!
Brett,
Garbanzo beans are one of the harder beans to digest, but there are steps you can take to increase digestability (and help with your little gas problem :)
I assume you are using canned beans... if you try cooking dried beans you can add a few bay leaves or a piece of kombu seaweed (I promise you won't taste it) to the cooking water to cut gas. Do not add salt until the end of cooking because they may not cook all the way. Or you can buy canned garbanzo beans from a brand that is aware of this trick. I like Eden Organic.
Other things YOU CAN TRY:
-a splash of apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
-a bit of fennel powder
-try mixing other types of beans in (aduki, mung or peas are easy to digest but others would be great to try because they all differing nutritional values)
-and most importantly... make sure you are chewing properly! One of the first stages of digestion is having the food mix with enzymes in your saliva... even if the food has a smooshy consistency already.
Try some of these things and I'm sure your family, friends and coworkers will thank you later.
Hey, nobody said I had a gas problem. What was said was EMILY accused the KITCHEN of smelling like a DOG fart.
And frankly, if the stuff starts out smelling that bad, there's no hope after it goes through the food gutter that is my digestive tract.
Yo bret! Check your E-mail. I just sent you a picture of my aero beard!
A part from your arm pits, GREAT episode again.
- Cold and/or exercise induced asthma can be a very serious problem. What they suggest is also a good and gradual warmup and cooldown. It especially hits bad when you stop the workout, not while you train. Fortunately it is a treatable condition.. doctors are there to help!
- Man, there isn't an episode without some kind of injury being addressed! I had plantar fascitis myself. Solved it in a week / 10 days with LOTS of stretching which I keep doing, LOTs of ICE and an elastic bandage to support the arch of the foot during those days. Luckely it worked for me, unfortunately someone really needs to get injections and stuff.
- Thanks for the great interview with Pete! I know what he means by that kind of atmosphere... and thanks for the suggestion for the corrals! ahaha
- Checked out Triabetes website! They seem really well organized and determined in helping medical research and awareness on the disease (also for the type 2 people). I hope I can soon find the time to write a blog post on everything, they really deserve it!
- I'm also mentally set up on a "seven day workout week". Being no pro, something always screws up, exactly...
Going to SLEEP now! :-D Ciao!

Black Mamba....I can't stop saying this in my head...Its hilarious...Bret I'm fairly new to your podcast...I freakin love it man...I'm a 41 yr old Tri wannabe...I'm definetily going to do it. I just need to train. I really enjoyed listening to your family run with your son and wife and dog. Your boy was funny as hell. I remember my kids putting playing cards in there spokes too....wait....I still do, with them. hahaha...
Petes finished up interview was great. I will for sure plan a tri aroung a vacation some time...what a great idea! He seems really cool too.
I'm going to try making hummas too. I had it not to long ago and it rocked. So I'll have to give it a try. Anyways just wanted to drop in and say hello. your Podcast Rocks!!!!! I now have to finish downloading them and listen to em all to get caught up. I especially or always take you along on my long runs on Sunday morning.
Take care Bret,
Rich from snowy Maine
Let me get this straight, chili and pureed beans are 90% of your diet and you wonder why you have gas?
After that first hummus episode, I promptly made "head of garlic+ can of beans" puree.. It isn't rocket science, no vampires were seen for months.
also, I like the buffering thing.. as a sysadmin type, I find myself describing thought process in terms of computers. I do wonder if we make this stuff up though just because it applies to computers.. I am the king of context switching. continuing mid-sentence minutes later is my specialty. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
sleep well.
