Gear for Running a 100 Mile Ultramarathon

Reader Comments (1)

Hello Bret,

I am writing this comment as a friend and out of geniune concern.

Great to hear that you have complete your 100 mile run. But, I am very disappointed about the your use of anti inflammatory / pain killing medication. And more importantly, I think it is very irresponsible of you to informing / or indirectly informing your viewers of how to consume such medications. You are a role model for many people - But, not a doctor!

Personally, as a long-time endurance athlete who is unfortunately suffering from arthritis in the hip - I do not consume / self-medicate myself with such products. The long-term use of such medications can cause serious health problems and they also can disrupt the homeostatic balance of the beneficial inflammatory process.

Perhaps, you should consider the long-term consequences of the discomfort and chronic injuries that you are subjecting yourself to!

Exercise and sport should be a pleasant pursuit - It should not be a test of how much pain and discomfort that you can endure! The long-term pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle should have its foundation based on having the mental-toughness to achieve you goals in a satisfying and enjoyable manner - Healthy progression, balanced, holistic! A true athlete / winner recognizes his or her limits and abilities and draws the line between self-destruction and healthy endeavors.

I am sure when you attended your triathlon coaching course, the use of anti-inflammatory medications was not a recommendation that you were given. So, be careful of what you are communicating to your devoted audience! Like it or not - You should be more responsible with your advise!

Be careful! And, do not cripple yourself and end up with a debilitating injury! I can tell you - Living with the fact that I can not go running anymore really sucks my friend! I still swim. I cycle! I do yoga! I lift weights! I even aqua-jog! But, not running really sucks!

Once again - Be careful!

Scott
